Helfer is a native of rural Donalda, Alberta, Canada in Canada, the children of Dennis Elaine and Dennis Elaine Helfer. She has German, English and Swedish heritage. She attended William E. Hay Composite High School located in Stettler, Alberta. The school was located on the family's farm along with her three sisters, Trena, Tammy and Tara. At the age of 17, the agent of her modeling agency spotted the model while waiting in line in a theatre.
